Feature learning in feature-sample networks using multi-objective optimization

Data and knowledge representation are fundamental concepts in machine learning. The quality of the representation impacts the performance of the learning model directly. Feature learning transforms or enhances raw data to structures that are effectively exploited by those models. In recent years, several works have been using complex networks for data representation and analysis. However, no feature learning method has been proposed for such category of techniques. Here, we present an unsupervised feature learning mechanism that works on datasets with binary features. First, the dataset is mapped into a feature--sample network. Then, a multi-objective optimization process selects a set of new vertices to produce an enhanced version of the network. The new features depend on a nonlinear function of a combination of preexisting features. Effectively, the process projects the input data into a higher-dimensional space. To solve the optimization problem, we design two metaheuristics based on the lexicographic genetic algorithm and the improved strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2). We show that the enhanced network contains more information and can be exploited to improve the performance of machine learning methods. The advantages and disadvantages of each optimization strategy are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Network community detection via iterative edge removal in a flocking-like system

We present a network community-detection technique based on properties that emerge from a nature-inspired system of aligning particles. Initially, each vertex is assigned a random-direction unit vector. A nonlinear dynamic law is established so that neighboring vertices try to become aligned with each other. After some time, the system stops and edges that connect the least-aligned pairs of vertices are removed. Then the evolution starts over without the removed edges, and after enough number of removal rounds, each community becomes a connected component. The proposed approach is evaluated using widely-accepted benchmarks and real-world networks. Experimental results reveal that the method is robust and excels on a wide variety of networks. Moreover, for large sparse networks, the edge-removal process runs in quasilinear time, which enables application in large-scale networks

Editorial - Quo Vadis SPRMN?

Avizinha-se mais um CNR e sem ter escolhido o tempo penso que será provavelmente apropriado para fazer uma reflexão sobre a acção recente da nossa Sociedade Científica que tanto prezamos. Sabemos que a missão da SPRMN não se sobrepõe a outras congéneres na Europa e no mundo já que não lhe compete a função reguladora da actividade incluindo aspectos técnico-científicos bem como da formação médica. Estes são atributos do Colégio da Especialidade da OM com quem aliás a SPRMN partilha de forma salutar muita informação, pontos de vista e até membros da direcção. Não acho que nos possamos queixar da forma proactiva com que temos trabalhado em conjunto mas tenho que reconhecer que na prática tarda o desenvolvimento de mudanças que possamos considerar estruturantes: o desenvolvimento de um sistema de créditos educativos com vista à recertificação, e a formação pós-graduada em verdadeiro ambiente de sub-especialização. Quanto à primeira, a ausência de obrigatoriedade da educação médica contínua, não impede uma prática profissional baseada no auto-didatismo e na experiência vivida. Não que tenha nada contra, mas nos dias de hoje e com a volatilidade do conhecimento, apenas me parecem ser acções insuficientes que podem culminar numa “generalização” e “indiferenciação” técnico-científica o que contradiz por sua vez o desiderato da sub-especialização. Sabemos que a Direcção do Colégio está a trabalhar na proposta de um internato médico com contorno de sub-especialização o que será sem duvida uma novidade total para muitos centros formadores. Serão esses centros capazes de responder a este repto - o que se irá entender por sub-especialização em termos de futura verificação curricular

This editorial will be the last one I write as President of SPRMN. After four years it is time to take stock of the life of our esteemed Scientific Society, extrapolating and perhaps anticipating the future. At the end of this second mandate, the first observation I make is that the term of the SPRMN Board should be longer and never less than 3 years. There are many things to accomplish, many actions that extend beyond the current two years and that would require the maintenance in function of the Directorate that has all the data to carry them to good port. Having said that, it is with great pride, satisfaction and a sense of mission accomplished that we will complete our mandate on March 15, 2019. I would like to invite you all to attend because the vitality of SPRMN is only the one that each of you is granting this society. As a final balance, I believe that some of the most successful events of this society were carried out, starting with our National Congress. We are, and should be, proud of the creation of the SPRMN School, an initiative that has two objectives: to educate and to transfer science and to bring the members of our society closer together. It was definitely a win.Este editorial será o ultimo que escrevo na qualidade de Presidente da SPRMN. Volvidos quatro anos é tempo de fazer um balanço do que foi a vida da nossa estimada Sociedade Científica, extrapolando e antevendo porventura o futuro. Findo este 2º mandato, a primeira constatação que faço é que o tempo de vigência da Direcção da SPRMN deveria ser mais longo nunca inferior a um espaço de 3 anos. Há muitas coisas para concretizar, muitas acções que se prolongam par além dos 2 anos vigentes e que necessitariam da manutenção em funções da Direcção que possui todos os dados para as levar a bom porto. Feita esta afirmação é com enorme orgulho, satisfação e sentido do dever cumprido que iremos completar o nosso mandato no próximo dia 15 de Março de 2019. Gostaria de vos convidar para marcar presença pois a vitalidade da SPRMN não é mais do que aquela que todos os sócios lhe concederem. Em jeito de balanço final, julgo que foram levados a cabo alguns dos mais bem sucedidos eventos da sociedade a começar pelo nosso Congresso Nacional. The effects of Hyperloop on the long-range personal and freight transportation industry in Europe

The transportation industry has experience little disruptive technologies since the introduction of airplane, over 100 years ago. Nevertheless, the sector is of extreme importance in connecting people and businesses together. Hyperloop technology brings the promise of a new, faster and cleaner mode of transport that could disrupt current transportation modes. To understand the potential effects of the disruptive technology, the author analyses the current long-range freight and personal transportation industry, the modes and its characteristics and the competition between them. Hyperloop has more potential to affect the personal segment, and particularly airlines. On the freight side, the impact will be confined to the road and air modes of transport, and its degree will be lower. Once the technology is fully operational, airlines should focus on intercontinental routes where air transportation is the only mode available. LCC, relying solely on continental routes, will have difficulties in making the transition and many will leave the market. FSA and LCC will engage in M&A for operational efficiency and enlargement of hub-and-spoke networks. Air freight carriers rely mostly in intercontinental routes and should not experience a business model change. Road transportation is increasingly focusing on the “last-mile” of transportation services and may benefit from decongestion of roads caused by a shift to Hyperloop in the long-range freight transportation in Europe. Environmental impact of mode shift is considerable and is mostly caused by a shift in domestic and continental routes from air to Hyperloop transportation.O setor de transporte tem experienciado poucas tecnologias disruptivas desde a introdução do avião, há mais de 100 anos. Contudo, o setor é muito importante para conectar pessoas e empresas. O Hyperloop traz a promessa de um novo modo de transporte mais rápido e limpo que pode perturbar os modos de transporte atuais. Para entender os seus efeitos potenciais, a atual indústria de transporte pessoal e mercadorias de longo alcance, os modos, suas características e concorrência entre elas é analisada. O Hyperloop tem mais potencial para afetar o segmento de passageiros, principalmente as companhias aéreas. No lado das mercadorias, o impacto será limitado aos modos de transporte rodoviário e aéreo, e o grau será menor. Quando a tecnologia estiver operacional, as companhias aéreas concentrar-se-ão em rotas intercontinentais nas quais o transporte aéreo é monopolista. As LCC, operando apenas rotas continentais, terão dificuldades em fazer a transição e algumas deixarão o mercado. As FSA e as LCC envolver-se-ão em fusões e aquisições para eficiência operacional e ampliação de redes hub-and-spoke. As transportadoras aéreas de mercadorias dependem principalmente de rotas intercontinentais e não devem sofrer alterações no modelo de negócios. O transporte rodoviário concentra-se cada vez mais na “última milha” do transporte e pode beneficiar do descongestionamento de estradas causada pela mudança no transporte de mercadorias de longo alcance na Europa para Hyperloop. O impacto ambiental da mudança de modo é considerável, sendo causado principalmente por uma mudança nas rotas domésticas e continentais do transporte aéreo de passageiros para Hyperloop
